Why Are So Many People Opposed to Reformed Theology?
Bereans,
This week I was looking for a particular podcast and among the videos YouTube suggested for me was a clip from a Q&A session at a Ligonier National Conference several years ago. I am very surprised that I have not seen this one before, as I have been fairly diligent about watching the Q&A's in the past. The main question featured in this clip is, "Why are so many people opposed to Reformed theology?" I was very interested in hearing the panelists' take on this question, as I personally asked this question a lot when I was first introduced to Reformed theology and I have been asked this question often as a pastor over the years. In this clip, Steve Lawson, R.C. Sproul, and John MacArthur provide an excellent, insightful response to the question.
This Sunday I will be preaching on the first opposition to the church, which is recorded in Acts 4. As we learn in this chapter, the first opposition to the gospel message came from the Jewish religious leaders. The very people who had been exposed to the truth the most, rejected it with the greatest ferocity. The people who named God's name and claimed to represent Him were the greatest enemies of the truth, yet they were convinced they were standing for God. (See John 16:2). They hated the truth because it threatened their pride, power, and the comfort they found in believing things that gave them a false security.
Things are no different today, as sinful human nature has not changed over the centuries. The fiercest reactions I've experienced to the doctrines of grace and Reformed theology have come from people who are active members of churches and who claim to know the Lord. Many people become absolutely furious when you explain to them that they had nothing to do with their salvation, or that a genuine conversion involves more than simply praying a prayer. I know that I resisted these truths at first, too, so I can have some sympathy toward those who at first recoil from the truth. However, we must realize that a refusal to submit to the truth of God's Word says a lot about the condition of one's heart (1 John 4:6). They need our prayers that the Holy Spirit would remove the blinders and tear down the wall of resistance in their hearts.
The answers these men provide are tough, but true. I pray that this video will help you understand why so much opposition to truth comes from among the visible "church" and that it will encourage you to pray for those who resist the truth.
