Slavery Reparations Interview
Bereans,
A hot topic of conversation in the public arena this past week was the interview of a royal expert by CNN anchor Don Lemon. From my understanding, the video was the most shared, viral video on the internet last week, and was nearing the top of the chart for the most shared video of the year. Some of you (us) were discussing it last Sunday after church. (For context, Don Lemon is an openly homosexual activist and frequently makes inflammatory statements regarding race.) In this segment, he attempts to trap his guest (who was on his show to be interviewed about the Queen's funeral) by bringing up slavery reparations. As with most reparations advocates, he "flattens" the subject to implicate only slave owners in America, while ignoring the worldwide history of slavery and its supply chain.
While I believe there are sinister motives to create and exploit deeper divisions in America behind this "flattening," I want to address this from a biblical perspective. The interviewee did not bring in Scripture, but her point is the one that the Bible would take, as well, which is that everyone in the "supply chain" must be held accountable. We have to look no further than the account of Joseph in Genesis 37-50. Scripture clearly implies that the Jewish brothers who sold Joseph into slavery were just as guilty (if not more) as the Midianite slave traders and the Egyptian slave owners. The sins of greed, theft, and coveting are all wrapped up in both the biblical account of Joseph and the worldwide history of slavery. "Flattening" the subject for the purposes of financial gain or of exacting revenge on one certain group does not do justice to the real issues behind the past and current sins around slavery.
The video brings up many points of discussion that I don't have the space or time to write about here. In fact, The Resistance Conferences that Wrath & Grace is sponsoring will be addressing this topic (among other culturally "sensitive" themes) in some of our sessions, including the conference hosted at Berean Covenant next Saturday. If you have not signed up, I encourage you to do so. Pray that we will cover these topics with grace, truth, and wisdom. I encourage you to look at such culturally "hot" topics from the broad perspective of God's Word, and don't be persuaded by those who attempt to "flatten" subjects out to fit their narrative and agenda. When you see people do this, you can rest assured there is a sinful, self-centered motive behind it.
The video below is an interview of Hillary Fordwich (Don Lemon's interviewee) after the video went viral. Watch the whole thing, as she goes into much more depth than what transpired between her and Lemon, as she articulates some of the depth of issues on this topic. These are subjects for which Christians need to be able to apply biblical truth.
